Gareth and his parents are very pleased on his gaining this high award, the 'Scout Cord' that is presented to Scouts on or before reaching the age of 15 years on achieving set proficiency tests and a wide variety of badges, it is an award especially set up by Baden-Powell when formulating his ideals for Scouting. The award was presented to Gareth by the three previous holders of this award from our Scout Troop as is the custom of the Scout Troop. They were Edward Walters and Robin Cooksley, both now in their thirties having gained the award some 17 years previously, and Mark Moss who gain his seven years ago ~ all are seen in the photograph with the Scouts. Robin had travelled from North Carolina, USA in order to be present. This emphasizes the importance attributed to the award and the great achievement gained by Gareth.
In order to gain this award Gareth has had to complete his Second Class and First Class badges, involving an increasing knowledge of his Scouting skills involving First Aid and emergencies, knotting, tree felling, environment, bridge building, mapping, hiking and camping. Gareth along with the other Scouts have constructed a bathroom from boarding, fitted skirting boards, part ceramic tiled and painted the walls, glazed a window and laid vinyl flooring, plumbing and electrical work, amongst many other building
skills as part of their Jobman Badge.
Gareth has also held several Patrol Weekend Camps where he has taken the lead without adult leaders being present, organising the programme and the menu for the camp with all cooking being carried out on open trench wood fires. Gareth accompanied by two other Scouts have just completed his 14-mile Journey involving planning a route in an area never visited previously, preparing a kit list to be carried along with other supplies, then carrying out a two day hike, finding their own camp site for the one night completing the hike the next day. The training and achievements gained by Gareth have far exceeded the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.
Gareth has thanked all the Leaders and his fellow Scouts for all the help and support
he has received which he greatly appreciates. Gareth will now become a Senior Scout in our Scout Troop.
